Candlelight Vigil in North Carolina

Driving a vehicle drunk is a purely selfish act. Our Megan was purely selfless and opened her heart to all. It is unimaginable and terrifying, one selfish and one selfless, had to meet and now we are experiencing a permanent and overwhelming loss.

Megan, 17, excited about life, was just beginning to look beyond the comforts of home and asking us as well as herself, "What can I be?"

This was to be the summer for visiting colleges and serious consideration of what would be the best for Megan.

Remarkably, Megan had already learned in her short life what college doesn't teach. She knew the value of what is important. Most of us spend a lifetime learning this, but she spent her life practicing it.

Material things and being #1 ran last to Megan. To her, the simple things, family and friends, having fun, and just participating, even when you're last, were her goals.

Wise beyond her years Megan still . .

* danced and laughed in the kitchen with her sisters

* slept with 10 pillows

* would ask "Is this a problem or an inconvenience?", therefore helping us put our priorities back into perspective

* who knew every line from Steel Magnolias, and one of her favorite lines was, "You know I love you more than your luggage"

* always looked and found the good in everyone

*she drew at the dining room table as a hobby and gave away her artwork

*would create her own cards rather than consider a store-bought

* in her spare time, Meg loved to go to the library

* she read and could have written Life's Little Instruction Book and Random Acts of Kindness, but our Megan lived them everyday

* she especially enjoyed poems from A Light in the Attic by Shel Silverstein

* she loved thrift shopping

* forced you to help her studying by talking in foreign accents

* enjoyed roll playing on camera

* always drank soda with a straw

* decorated the house for every occasion

* looked forward to going to Sunday afternoon movies with Mom at the Ritz Movie Theatre

* sang opera with hand motions

* ate gummy bears and peppermint patties

* gave away her favorite things

* she liked listening to a variety of music from Elvis, to the Carpenters, Sarah Brightman, and anything Broadway, and always made everyone dance to "Be Our Guest" from Beauty and the Beast

* she never needed a reason to give a gift

* Megan's birthday was July 26th, but she started celebrating on July 1st

* always asked "How was your day and what was the best or funniest thing that happened to you today?"

*attended every family function

* who accidentally waited for her school bus at 11 PM

* most importantly, she lived in the moment, enjoying everything and everyone around her

We are thankful for these memories. Megan's life was at the beginning, a new horizon was out there to accomplish. Tragically, irresponsibly, in such a violent, abrupt way, Megan was taken away from us. We, Meg's family and friends, have been cheated, and for one reason alone, BECAUSE DRIVING A VEHICLE DRUNK IS A PURELY SELFISH ACT.
